How to choose the length of the TRRS cable for a split keyboard 2

Hello to all split keyboard enthusiasts,

Following up on our previous post, I'd like to continue discussing how to choose the right length for your TRRS cable.

To make things clearer this time, I've connected all types of METASPIRA DENSE cables (excluding the 80cm version) to my beloved Keyball61. I hope this helps you find the perfect cable for your setup.

Installation Standard: 12cm Apart

Installation standard 12cm apart

I've placed the split keyboards 12cm apart, which might be just enough space to fit a mug between them. This setup could be ideal for working at small tables in cafes, where you might accidentally knock over the mug due to the tight space. For me personally, I type with the keyboards about 6cm apart, where the L-type 15cm cable feels just right.

15cm Cable: Compactness is Key

At 12cm with the split keyboard installed, it seems a little short. The TRRS cable draws an arc like an oval. At times like this, there is strong tension at the base of the TRRS. Please be careful as excessive tension can lead to disconnection or poor connection of the TRRS cable.
In addition, as I create this blog, I type on the keyboards with a distance of about 6 cm from each other. At that distance, I feel that the L-type 15cm is perfect.
  • METASPIRA DENSE TRRS Cable, Straight Type, 15cm

In the L-type keyboard I mentioned earlier, the keyboards seemed to be a little apart, but in the straight-type one, they seem to be too close together. The base and apex of the cable draw a steep radius. If your split keyboard's TRRS socket is on the top, like the Killer Whale, that might be fine, but if it's on the side, like the Keyball, a straight TRRS cable might not be recommended for short distances. Hmm.

30cm Cable: Have Your Mug Handy

    • METASPIRA DENSE TRRS Cable, Angle Type, 30cm

When connecting an L type 30cm, a distance of 12cm is just right. The base of the cable is not bent strangely and extends straight. Also, the top of the cable also draws a generous arc. It seems like it would be easier to have a mug on hand and take a break while working.

If it's a straight 30cm keyboard, there seems to be no problem with a keyboard that has a TRRS socket on the side. The cable is wrapped around it with a reasonable amount of flex. METASPIRA DENSE has a custom-made cable core with a thickness that allows just the right amount of clearance between the spring and the cable core. I think this adjustment leads to a balance between appropriate tension and ease of handling.

    50cm Cable: A Versatile Choice

    • METASPIRA DENSE TRRS Cable, Angle Type, 50cm

Personally, I think if you can't decide on the length, just buy 50cm. I think. You may also want to place an A4 document between the split keyboards. Or a mug. Or you might apologetically set it up on a messy desk. The length of 50cm is a versatile length that can accommodate all of them.

The same can be said for the straight type 50cm. As you can see in the photo, the excess cable is wrapped around the center of the keyboard, but the cable itself is hard enough to prevent it from bunching up in strange directions.

    Summary

    What did you think.

Choosing the right TRRS cable length can improve both the ease of work and the aesthetics of your desk. If it's too short, it will interfere with your work, and if it's too long, the cables will be spread out in front of you and you won't be motivated.
